The spectacular terrain here varies along with its list of things to do and see. From the long sandy spits running along its southern Pacific coast, visiting oyster farms on Willapa Bay, bird-watching at Gray's Harbor National Wildlife Refuge experiencing the charming town of Seaview and Cape Disappointment State Park to visiting the wonders of Mt. St Helens National Volcanic Monument, to windsurfing, hiking, biking skiing...and onto endless recreation possibilities in the Columbia River Gorge...it's all here in Washington State's southern corner.
Mount Rainer stands brilliantly over this portion the state, beholding the largest glacial system in the continental United States with more than two dozen major glaciers. It is the centerpiece of Mount Rainier National Park where breathtaking views of the summit are offered at several vantage points within the National Park.
Mount St. Helens, made famous from its 1980 eruption, is a vivid reminder of the power of a volcano. The U.S. Congress set aside an 110,000-acre monument for natural recovery, and to support research, recreation and education. Five visitor centers give travelers a firsthand perspective of this historic event, and a close up view of its crater and lava dome. |
