Central Idaho is home to the nation's first destination ski resort, Sun Valley, Idaho. It became a winter wonderland for high society and Hollywood stars that were whisked away from Ketchum's train depot by horse-drawn sleighs to the stylish mountain lodge where their ski vacations were filled with thrill and pampering. Today, Sun Valley continues to emanate its grand-old style with state of the art equipment that only those of yesteryear could imagine. This area hosts so much more in beauty, adventure and history with hiking, biking and horseback ventures right out the back door, or through rarely traveled wilderness, nationally preserved Silver Creek (Hemingway's favorite fishing escape) nationally preserved volcanic lava fields and ice caves, captivating mountain towns rich in history (mining and sheep herding) tranquil mountain lakes, long-distance bike routes to bike paths and skate parks. There are many galleries, boutiques and fine restaurants, some compare with the best in the world, and there is a wide range of lodgings to choose from.
Sun Valley is the smallest community of the Gem State's prized Wood River Valley. The valley is made up of several small towns, Bellevue, Hailey, Ketchum and Sun Valley. The hub of activity is Ketchum offering visitors first-class restaurants, galleries and high-end boutiques.
North over the Galena summit lies the scenic Sawtooth Valley and spectacular Sawtooth Mountain range. The jagged peaks mystically skirt peaceful pristine alpine lakes and the valley below where elk, antelope and deer freely wander. Tucked at the base of Galena, in the Sawtooth Valley, is the headwaters to the Salmon River, known as the River of No Return. The wandering Salmon River winds some 425 miles through central Idaho's designated wilderness and by the quiet mountain towns of Stanley, Clayton, Challis, Salmon, Riggins and Whitebird before joining the Snake River on the Oregon border. The entire area is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts of every kind, and retailers are able to supply the tools and services required for the visitor's sport of choice.
