Nicknamed The City of Roses, Portland is emerging as one of the most successful downtown city centers in the U.S., as noted by several pacific northwest publications. It is one of the few cities in the west that continues to maintain a small town feel with the amenities of a sophisticated urban city. Their award winning mass transit system is one of the most advanced in the U.S., whisking locals from its many neighborhoods to Portland's distinct downtown districts: Downtown, The Pearl District, Old Town/China Town and Nob Hill. On the east side of the Willamette River, a different aura emerges where popular neighborhoods blend a residential, parish-like environ sporting bookstores, restaurants, coffeehouses and lovely parks.
Downtown Portland flourishes with beautiful gardens and parks, many museums, restored 19th-century architecture, and historic landmarks. Pioneer Courthouse Square, a pedestrian only brick piazza amphitheater, attracts locals and visitors alike for its free concerts, lovely fountains and lunchtime camaraderie. Other well-known points of interest include the Classical Chinese Garden reflecting a 15th-century Ming-style walled garden honoring the city's Asian influence, and its namesake...the International Test Rose Garden.
Portland's nightlife is abuzz as well from fine dining to the performing arts, convivial dining to sporting events. No worries, over your favorite dining style, countless restaurants and cafés offer a variety of ethnic foods with Northwest cuisine, of course, dominating the market featuring: fresh salmon, halibut, crab, clams, oysters, locally grown organic produce....And, microbrew... for Portland is known as the micro brewing capital of the world. Most of the finer lodgings are found in the Downtown district and along the western edge of the Willamette River.
Portland is the exciting city at adventure's beckon call with Mt. Hood rising majestically to the east, Willamette Valley wineries and Oregon's extraordinary ocean beaches just a short distance away.
