The Oregon Coast is best described as the Northern and Southern Coast. Oregonians are quick to point out this fact as the rugged Pacific coastline vastly differs as you travel north from the California border to the Columbia River. Venturing along the southerly route, travelers discover the unspoiled and mesmerizing stretch of mostly undeveloped coastline. This section of the southern coast is less dependent on tourism, reflecting a more isolated existence. The banana belt, just above the California border, Brookings, logs in the state's highest temperatures. It is also the nation's largest grower of lilies and boasts a botanical garden and azalea park. Up the coast, Port Orford has been compared to Big Sur before the crowds and as you drive north more active communities begin with Bandon, the cranberry capital of Oregon - a golfer's paradise featuring three world-class golf courses and a booming seaside village of 3,000 residents. New bistros, art galleries and upscale lodgings will impress even the most discerning traveler. Florence, however, already a retirement hub, welcomes visitors as a growing vacation target. The coastline here transforms into a sweeping sand-dune landscape to Coos Bay where activities pick up as you travel north.

The northern coast runs from Yachats to Astoria with Highway 101 meandering nearly the entire coastline. At the tip of the northern coast, Astoria is the oldest American settlement west of the Rockies. Founded in 1811, it heralds a storied past, boasting more buildings per square foot on the National Historic Register than all of Oregon. Astoria is a blend of hardworking port city personality and small town, historic pride. A choice of upscale and fun lodging opportunities are found throughout Astoria.
Cannon Beach to the south, well known for its prominent Haystack Rock, offers visitors a serious array of upscale lodging, fine dining restaurants, art galleries and quaint cafes. This seaside gem has been called the "Carmel of the North".
Gaining in popularity is Pacific City which offers three public beaches: Robert Straub Park, Pacific Avenue in the center of town, and our favorite Cape Kiwanda. You'll find clothing and gift shops, cozy cafes, and you can purchase fresh salmon directly from the dory fisherman upon their return.
Destination Northwest can help you find the best lodges and inns all along this spectacular coast... let your journey begin!

As the spotlight turns to British Columbia, host of the 2010 Winter Olympics, there may be no better time to explore British Columbia's amazing coastline. A favorite to many, Vancouver Island runs nearly the length of British Columbia's southern mainland creating a massive protective barrier from the mighty Pacific Ocean. Lying between, in the Strait of Georgia, are thousands of peaceful islands. Vancouver Island's main highway runs from Victoria at its southern tip to Port Hardy on the northern tip, approximately 315 miles. Although the drive could be made in a day, it is not recommended as one would miss the opportunity to explore the pristine beauty of the island's wilderness, parks, the First Nation cultural centers, museums, and the charming coastal towns.

Back on the mainland and traveling north of Vancouver, coastal highway 101 breaks between ferry terminals, with the only paved access ending 100 miles up the coast from Vancouver in the quaint village of Lund. From Vancouver's Horseshoe Bay the ferry weaves through scenic islands enroute to the Sechelt Peninsula - along the Sunshine Coast. Several charming and inviting coastal towns are found along the route, as well as a few hidden marinas and small resort communities. A second ferry ride picks up cars and walk-on passengers at Earls Cove, then cruises onto Saltry Bay. The road continues through Powell River, then onto Lund. Along this route we feature several wonderful lodges, dining venues and cultural First Nation sites, all highly recommended! |
