Bozeman offers a plethora of in-town activities to keep you busy on your visit, from exploring the Museum of the Rockies with your children to wandering through the many art galleries downtown. Besides the many opportunities in-town, the surrounding area provides a member of outdoor recreation opportunities. Three impressive ski areas operate from 20 minutes to the north of town to an hour south. The scenic community of Big Sky nestles high in mountain meadows, surrounded by timberland, the Spanish Peaks Primitive Area and the Gallatin National Forest. Majestic 11,166-foot Lone Mountain towers over the paradise, where in 1969, Chet Huntley, the late newscaster, and a group of corporate investors purchased some ranchland. The Gallatin River is Bozeman's backyard playground, and is a true Montana classic. This is the famous "Mad Mile," where the river winds down a picturesque canyon and contains some great whitewater. The Gallatin River is about twelve miles long from its origin at the confluence of the West and East Gallatin rivers to Three Forks, Montana, where it joins the Jefferson and Madison rivers to form the Missouri River.
