Nestled in the Willamette Valley between the breathtaking scenery of the Cascade Mountains and the Oregon Coast Range, Eugene is often referred to as "The Emerald City." Douglas fir forests border Eugene on three fronts lending to its rich history as a lumber town. The Willamette River flows on a diagonal course through the center of the city. One of the most loved and used facilities is the park and greenway system that borders the entire river. Four graceful bike-pedestrian-only bridges connect both sides of the river and provide a loop system for walkers, joggers, bikers, and roller-bladers. Eugene COC, Aug 2008
Springfield is a growing city of approximately 60,000 and a part of Oregon's second-largest area - Springfield and Eugene - at nearly 250,000 in the metro area. Gateway to the McKenzie River noted for its fine fishing and rafting opportunities. Be forewarned, the McKenzie is regarded as one of Oregon’s coldest rivers! Springfield’s old town is not much of a destination but for antique and second hand collectors have often found rewarding finds. DNW, Aug 2008
Cottage Grove nestles at the southern tip of the Willamette Valley, where the Cascade Mountains touch Oregon’s coastal mountain range. Cottage Grove is home to six covered bridges and is referred to as the Covered Bridge Capitol of Lane County. The covered bridges can be toured in a few hours and are less than ten minutes from the historic downtown area. Even if you aren’t the active type, just experiencing the areas natural beauty is refreshing recreation.
