Bend is the outdoor recreation capital of Oregon, with snow-capped peaks dominating the skyline. Bend is one of few places that visitors can literally ski in the morning and golf in the afternoon. Known as "the sunny side of Oregon," the Cascade mountains act as a protective buffer, giving Bend only 12 inches of precipitation per year. That compares to 42" for Portland, 36" for Seattle and 20" for San Francisco. The largest Oregon city east of the Cascades swelled from the 90’s boom-era but still maintains a ski bum attitude with neighborhood Mt. Bachelor offering excellent skiing and mountain activities.
Nestled next to the Deschutes River on 3,300 acres of pristine high desert, lush meadows and beautiful pine forests, Sunriver, Oregon, is one of the premier Northwest destinations for vacationers, golfers, and outdoor enthusiasts of all ages. With the Cascade Mountains to the west and the Newberry Volcanic National Monument to the east, Sunriver boasts an exciting array of world class amenities such as golf, tennis, swimming, horseback riding, kayaking, canoeing, white water rafting, fly fishing, biking, hiking, bird watching, spa and fitness centers, music and art festivals, and a variety of restaurants from fine dining to casual. Nearly a 100-mile breathtaking loop beginning in Bend, Sunriver or LaPine leads past Mt. Bachelor and the alpine lakes of Central Oregon, with spectacular scenery and inviting stops along the way. Designated a National Scenic Byway by the USDA. Forest Service, the drive is open all summer. But from November through May, it's closed beyond Mt. Bachelor due to snow. A few of the lakes you might experience include Todd Lake, Sparks Lake, Cultus Lake, and Crane Prairie Reservoir. This is an angler's paradise, plus, boaters, canoeing and swimming are favorite pastimes for many.
