At 5,920 feet above sea level, Sun Valley takes the warmer months to new heights. Powdery slopes give way to perfect greens. High-speed quads on Baldy transport hikers and bikers to high-alpine terrain. And all that winter snow melts into summer whitewater adventures and blue-ribbon fishing. Add in all the festivals, concerts and gallery walks and you'll see why there's a lot to the Go Higher spirit even when winter takes a well-deserved vacation.
The Big Wood's headwaters are found just west of Galena Peak which is over 11,000 feet high. From there it flows southeast and then south when it reaches Sun Valley. From Sun Valley the river flows past Ketchum, Hailey, and Bellevue before reaching Magic Reservoir. Almost its entire length is traversed by Route 75. Access along Route 75 is easy providing many places to pull off and fish. With miles, upon miles of access, easy wading, nice sized, wild fish, and a beautiful backdrop, there is no better place to spend a hot summer day, or even a winter afternoon. It's impossible to miss the cottonwoods, riparians for this river, from which the water takes it name. The Wood is slowly being recognized as one of the most productive winter fisheries in the western United States and entertains fly-fisherman of all levels during the splendid summer and fall seasons.
