Dillon is the headquarters for the Beaverhead Deer Lodge National Forest, with dozens of mountain lakes, great fishing rivers and streams, and wildlife in every nook and cranny. Surrounded on three sides by the Continental Divide, its land area consists of deep basins separated by towering mountain ranges.
Explore hundreds of miles of hiking and snowmobile trails, dig for crystals, visit ghost towns and drop a line in the West's best fisheries…the Madison, the Beaverhead and the Big Hole. It's all right here where the Old West began, Dillon and southwestern Montana. Dillon COC, Aug 2008
The very much alive ghost town, Virginia City, Montana, is frozen in time. It is a remarkably well preserved old west Victorian gold mining town just 20 miles west of Yellowstone National Park (90 miles by road). When the gold ran out, there was still enough left so that homes and businesses were occupied, but there was not enough wealth to remodel the buildings. So it froze, and now represents the whole Victorian era. It is the true and original Old West. It is a gem, held within an incredibly rich area of natural beauty, recreation and history. All of Montana has the deepest pride and affection for Virginia City. Dramatic tales of the early days in this vicinity are legion.
Located in Southwestern Montana, the Madison River is formed by the Firehole and Gibbon Rivers within Yellowstone National Park. It runs north to Three Forks where it joins the Jefferson and Gallatin Rivers to form the headwaters of the Missouri.
The Madison River is considered to be Montana's most outstanding river. Expert fly fisherman claim it features the best dry fly fishing and highest trout density, plus the most consistent fishing action. And equally as important, it presents some of the most picturesque scenery imaginable.
