Lopez is the most rural of the three major islands, covering 29.5 square miles. The landscape blends woods with rolling farmlands and open spaces with shimmering vistas. It is also known as the friendliest of the San Juan Islands. Don’t forget to wave to passing motorists – a local custom for many years! There’s a genuine spirit of community here and a special feeling for life that pervades the population of 2,200.
Lopez is home to many artist, craftspeople, musicians, farmers, fisherman, nature lovers, and eccentrics. Don’t miss the Saturday’s Farmers Market in the summer set in Lopez Village, the islands hub of activity. The village is home to a variety of shops, galleries, bakery, coffee shops and restaurants as well as a fully stocked grocery store, pharmacy, organic grocery, and other services.
Lopez Island is also known for its popular beach areas that allow for long walks along the shoreline or wooded trails of the State and County Parks. Agate Beach, Shark Reef Park, Otis Perkins Park, Spencer Spit State Park, Odlin County Park, and Upright Head are among the favorites. Fishing, boating, kayaking and biking are popular outdoor activities.
Lopez Island is the first ferry stop from Anacortes aboard the Washington State Ferries. Sailing time is approximately 45 minutes.
