Located on Bellingham Bay with Mt. Baker as its backdrop, Bellingham is the last major city before the Washington coastline meets the Canadian border. Bellingham is 85 miles north of Seattle and an hour south of Vancouver, B.C. Transportation links connect the community to the nearby San Juan Islands and Victoria on Vancouver Island.
Known locally as the Bellingham-Mt Baker region, it encompasses the areas small towns and districts. These local communities are rich in history, culture and the arts. You’re never far from a fine art gallery, one-of-kind museum or a performance venue. Soak up the local ambiance at an award winning brew pub, a boutique waterfront restaurant or gourmet coffee shop. Bellingham has an active waterfront port that supports fishing, boat building, shipping and marina operations.
The downtown area has a mixture of restaurants, art galleries and specialty shops. The cultural district includes the respected Whatcom Museum of History and Art. Originally built in 1892 as city hall, the museum’s imposing brick building is the centerpiece of a four-building campus, including a children’s museum.
Bellingham is home to Western Washington University on Sehome Hill, from which you have a sweeping view across the bay to the San Juan Islands. Visitors bound for Alaska depart on the Alaska Marine Highway System ferries from the Bellingham Cruise Terminal in the Historic Fairhaven District. Spend the day in Bellingham’s renowned district’s Victorian-era buildings. Here you can find shops offering hand-crafted products, local restaurants that serve fresh seafood plus art galleries featuring Northwest artisans.
The Bellingham Mt. Baker region is blessed with tons of outdoor fun, all within easy reach. From the salt-water bays to the peak of Mt. Baker, where else can you "do it all" in one day? This is an action packed, hold on to your pants kind of place. Try some challenging ice climbing on a glacier flanking "the big white one." Settle into a sleek kayak and paddle around the uncrowded coves along Chuckanut Drive. Shush down the slopes of a laid-back ski destination that boasts the most snowfall EVER in a single season at Mt Baker Ski Area. We are talking a world record of 1,140 inches! This is the mountain where snowboarding was virtually invented, but skiers and snowboarders of all skills are welcome and treated like neighbors. Bellingham Whatcom County Tourism, Sep 2008
