The Sunshine Coast is located northwest of Greater Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada. The Sunshine Coast is accessible only by sea, air or a six day expert hike from Squamish! It has a somewhat isolated feel, yet it is within an hour of a major metropolitan centre. The Sunshine Coast has a rich colorful heritage and a bright future as a haven for recreationalists of all types.
The Sunshine Coast is named for its bright sunny days that out number the gloomy by a favorable margin. The Sunshine Coast is actually two Peninsulas that extend out from the towering Coastal Mountains. Numerous coves and colorful harbors prosper in this scenic and pristine region. The Destination Northwest team can introduce to the Sechelt First Nation Cultural Center and setup spiritual guided hikes into the surrounding wilderness that will enlighten you on the wonders and healing powers of the woods. Our connections include lovely inns and lodges, plus restaurants offering fresh local seafood and organic BC farm raised fruits and vegetables. Kayaking, diving and boating are just a few of the popular recreational activities.
One of the best-kept secrets of Desolation Sound is Okeover Arm. Located on the east side of the Malaspina Peninsula on the northern reaches of the Sunshine Coast. The warm waters of Okeover inlet are a haven for wilderness kayaking, canoeing, sailing and incredible clear water diving. These inviting waters are also home to a large Mari culture industry, in particular oysters and clams.
Desolation Sound and its renowned Marine Park possess a magical magnetism that draws boaters and paddlers from distant shores. By far the largest marine park in British Columbia is virtually free of development and refuge to a variety of wildlife. The sound is home to the steepest drop from mountain peak to sea bottom in all of North America. It has many waterfalls cascading into milky green glacial runoff. A network of impressive and desolate fjords creates a boaters haven and peaceful exploration for adventuresome sea kayakers.
