Nestled on the east coast of central Vancouver Island north of the Comox Valley, and long known as the Salmon Capital of the World, Campbell River is a natural destination, in more ways than one. Gateway to Strathcona Park, the Discovery Islands, and remote north and west Vancouver Island. In these renowned wilderness destinations, you'll find a world of mountains, coastlines, and islands just waiting to be explored. Take in views of Discovery Passage, access Quadra Island via the local ferry service and explore trails along Campbell River's namesake, a designated British Columbia Heritage River. Alert Bay is located on Cormorant Island (reached by a 40 minute ferry from Port McNeill), amidst splendid scenery and abundant wildlife. Alert Bay is historically significant as the oldest community on North Vancouver Island, and is well known as a centre for the powerful resurgence of Native culture. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy the miles of hiking trails, unique whale-watching sites and kayaking.
Native history and culture is the heart and soul of Alert Bay. The Kwakwaka蜘akw have share their traditional art, dances, songs, legends, ceremonies, and language during the summer season. The T'sala Cultural Group dance regularly in the community痴 Big House and the U知ista Cultural Centre is an internationally-known facility that houses one of the finest collections of historical artifacts depicting the Potlatch Ceremony of the Kwakwaka蜘akw. Be sure to visit the galleries and meet some of the local-native artists.
