Tucked peacefully within the forests of southeast Alaska, on the western shore of American's longest fjord-- the Lynn Canal, Haines is surrounded by scenic majesty and abundance of wildlife. The beautiful Chilkat Valley draws thousands of visitors who come to enjoy the year-round opportunities for outdoor recreation and wildlife viewing. This small community is often called "Alaska's Best Kept Secret".
Haines is 85 air miles northwest of the capital city of Juneau and about 600 air miles southeast of Anchorage and Fairbanks. It is connected by road to the interior of Alaska and the continental United States by the Alaska Canada (Alcan) Highway. The Tlingit Indians were the original inhabitants of the Chilkat Valley and the village of Klukwan, 22 miles from Haines, is still the mother village for the Tlingit nation. Their culture and totemic art is seen throughout the community of Haines. Today, Haines is recognized as on of America’s best outdoor towns with access to national parks, summer and winter sports, plus an active downtown scene with funky coffee shops, brewpubs and high quality recreational gear shops. Yakutat, gateway to the Hubbard Glacier and home of the St. Elias Dancers, a Tlingit dance group. Located on the scenic Gulf Coast of Alaska, and surrounded by Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Tongass National Forest, Yakutat attracts a wide variety of outdoor enthusiasts to hike beaches, float rivers, explore bays and passages, climb mountains, view glaciers, and surf remote breaks. Yakutat Bay provides the finest saltwater sport fishing in Alaska. Mount St. Elias stands like a perfect pyramid soaring 18,008 feet into the heavens on the Yakutat skyline, the second tallest peak in the United States. The Tlingit name is Was-eiti-shaa, meaning "Mountain in Icy Bay". Hubbard Glacier is the largest tidewater glacier in North America and is located just 30 miles by air or water from Yakutat. During the spring of 2002, as in 1986, the glacier advanced across the mouth of Russell Fiord, creating the world's largest glacial lake.
