Experience the beautiful Columbia Gorge located twenty five minutes east of Portland. Activities and wonders abound in this land of rugged cliffs, sweeping vistas and cascading waterfalls. Carved out by the catastrophic floodwaters of the last Ice Age, today this area offers a natural wonderland that winds 80 miles and carves 4200 feet deep. It is the only sea-level route cutting through the lush Cascade mountain range.
Wind surfing capital of the world is Hood River's latest distinction. Previously known for growing luscious apples, pears, cherries, peaches and other fruits, and for the view of the majestic snowcapped peak of Mt. Hood, Hood River has become the destination of choice for wind surfers from around the world. There are many orchards and vineyards in Hood River. People from all over Oregon make an annual trek in the fall to the many farm stands to stock up on fresh apples and pears. Welcome to Oregon, Aug 2008
Built upon the hills of the Columbia Gorge, The Dalles terrain is a combination of forests, orchards, and high desert, offering great outdoor recreation and an area rich in history and resources. Surrounded in pure Oregon beauty, The Dalles offers views of Mt. Adams, the Klickitats and the Columbia River. The downtown area is a registered historic district featuring architecture from the late 1800s and the early 1900s. Be sure to visit the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and Wasco County Historical Museum and the remnants of Fort Dalles still stands including “The Surgeon’s Quarters,” one of the finest examples of gothic architecture west of the Mississippi. Mt. Hood rises 11,235 ft. above sea level; its base spreads over 92 miles. Mt. Hood is the highest mountain in Oregon; the 4th highest in the string of Cascade Mountain Range volcanoes that stretch from Mt. Garibaldi in British Columbia south to Mt. Lassen in Northern California. Mt. Hood boasts 5 ski areas: Timberline Lodge Ski Area, Mt. Hood Meadows, Mt. Hood Ski Bowl, Cooper Spur Ski Area, and Summit Ski Area. Timberline Lodge Ski Area has the only year-round ski season in North America, closed for only 2 weeks in late September. Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Area covers 2159 acres, with 240 acres of night skiing and Mt. Hood Ski Bowl is the largest night skiing area in North America.
Government Camp is the site of the oldest ski area on Mt Hood and home to the popular and inexpensive Summit Ski Area.
