Located in northern Idaho, Coeur d’Alene is defined by blue skies, sparkling water and pine-forested mountains. Coeur d’Alene has become known as the playground of the Pacific Northwest for five-star amenities in a stunning natural setting. Downtown Coeur d’Alene, founded in 1888, is an entertainment and shopping center with more than 125 retail stores, restaurants and professional businesses. The pristine serenity of the lake and its surroundings has earned Lake Coeur d'Alene a reputation as one of the world's most beautiful sights. Enjoy the friendly atmosphere of the City Beach and numerous watersports. Lake Coeur d'Alene is about 30 miles long and ranges from 1 to 3 miles wide. It has 135 miles of beautiful shoreline and is an average of 120 feet deep. The lake is fed by three rivers: The Coeur d'Alene, the St. Joe, and the St. Maries. CDA COC, Aug 2008
Any route toward St. Maries will be scenic. From the north you’ll follow the Coeur d’Alene Scenic Byway along the eastern shore of the lake, and coming from the south you’ll travel on the White Pine Scenic Byway through the largest stands of white pine and cedar in America. Initially founded as a lumber town, St. Maries has a reputation for being one of the finest hunting areas in the west. Nearby, Marble Creek highlights the logging heritage of the area. One visit will not begin to cover the diversions of Northern Idaho. A summer would only sample the fishing, boating and such. A winter might let you ski or snowmobile all the runs. A spring spent driving back roads might show you where the wildflowers lurk. And a fall search for Golden Aspens only touches the high points. St. Maries is truly a city for all seasons. St Maries COC, Aug 2008
