Mt. Angel is located 18 miles northeast of Salem on Highway 214. Founded in the late 1800s by German settlers, this town has an Old World flavor which is heightened by the many Bavarian style storefronts and the beautiful Benedictine Abbey. They celebrate their German heritage each year during the Oktoberfest, held in September.
Mt. Angel Abbey, set high above Mt. Angel on a 300 foot bluff is a century old Benedictine monastic community built in 1883 by Swiss Benedictine monks. Views from the bluff include Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams, as well as the lush Willamette Valley farmland. The beautiful library, designed by Alvar Aalto, stores a priceless collection of illuminated manuscripts, and features a display of rare, hand printed books. Guided tours can be arranged by appointment. Mt Angel COC, Aug 2008
Founded in 1854, Silverton is an historic town with stately homes shaded by grand, old oak trees nestled in the heart of the Willamette Valley. A community surrounded by fields of crops including hazelnuts, marionberries, strawberries, grass seed and irises. Once a logging town, Silverton is now known for its gardens, restaurants, antique boutiques, art galleries and shops. With its scenic beauty, rich history, charming downtown and gems of nature, it is no wonder Silverton is Oregon’s Garden City – the perfect place to grow your dreams! – Silverton COC, Aug 2008
Salem is home of Oregon’s capital city, and the beautiful region of Marion County and Polk Countys. Salem is known for its historic attractions that date back to pioneer days, and their annual festivals such as the Salem Art Fair & Festival, Oregon State Fair, PGE Festival of Lights Holiday Parade, Jefferson Mint Festival, Aurora Colony Day, Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Annual Pow Wow and many others.
The Salem area is a great place for kids and families, with one of the top children’s museum in the Pacific Northwest, as well as a storybook theme park. Salem COC, Aug, 2008
