Northern Idaho, or the Panhandle, boasts dense forests, sapphire lakes and beautiful mountain ranges. Outdoor recreation is abundant in this region with spectacular golf courses, water sports, fishing, Nordic and alpine skiing, plus wonderful hiking and mountain biking opportunities.
Northern Idaho has arrived on the tourism map with Coeur d'Alene and Sandpoint leading the charge. Even the small towns of Kellogg and Wallace are seeing signs of growth. The Panhandle is most noted for its resorts that flank the shores of Priest Lake, Coeur d'Alene, and Lake Pend Oreille.
Some of Idaho's designated byways hold historic significance, but all have extraordinary scenic value. Trace the steps of Lewis and Clark, discover the diversity of Idaho's landscape, or glimpse wildlife in their natural habitat. Several of the Northern routes are part of the International Selkirk Loop, a 280 mile scenic byway that connects Idaho, Washington and British Columbia. Sunset magazine once called this loop "Northwest's most scenic drive."
