Custer-Missouri River Country covers the eastern third of the state claiming 21 of Montana's 56 counties. Inhabited by roughly 200,000 people, with nearly half residing in Billings, Custer-Missouri Country remains vast and peaceful. The region encompasses huge parcels of open-vistas where abundant wildlife (mule deer, golden eagles, wild turkey and pronghorn antelope) thrive. Small prairie towns dot the landscape from Fort Peck Lake to the remote southeast Miles City, the most famous cowboy city.
Billings, nicknamed the Magic City, is set against rimrocks carved by the Yellowstone River. It is the state's largest city, and carries the state's most diverse economy emphasis on cattle, farming and minerals, especially oil. From rodeos to theatre productions, it has a little something for everyone. The Yellowstone Art Museum is an important visual art center for Montana. The Western Heritage Center offers visitors a trip into the past with interactive computers, hands-on exhibits, videos and theatre.
Custer Country has historic parks in honor of famous American battles, horse ranges to dinosaur digs. The Little Bighorn Battlement National Monument has guided tours and exhibits relating to the 1876 famous battle. Visit Makoshika Dinosaur Museum located in Glendive, the heart of dinosaur country.
