The Winterlake Lodge lies 198 trail miles northwest of Anchorage along Alaska’s historic Iditarod Trial. The lodge sits on 15 acres overlooking Winter Lake, a finger-shaped 2-mile lake where guests land by floatplane in the summer and skiplane in the winter.
Many species of Alaskan birds, wildflowers and berries that are difficult to see in other locales are abundant here. Winterlake Lodge is also the starting point for neighboring adventures. Guests float the Happy River, fish the Canyon Creek area, explore the Upper Skwentna River and scenic Red Creek. Exploration opportunities are offered daily, year round. It is the Finger Lake checkpoint along the Iditarod Trail - open for winter adventure activities from November to April.

The Trapper's Cabin: This cabin sits at the far east end of our property and is connected to the main lodge by a rolling path. It is the old homestead site of the area's infamous Mr. Gene Leonard. The log construction is representative of most old Alaskan bush homes, and much of the furniture is handmade Alaska style. The cabin has a queen bed located in a separate bedroom, a simple private bath, additional sleeping for two people in single beds, and a large spacious living room. The cabin is heated by woodstove, which your guide will gladly stoke up for you before you turn in for the evening.
The Red Lake Trail Cabin: This log cabin is located near the lodge on the west side of the property. The cabin accommodates seven people in three separate bedrooms, one room offering a queen bed. There is a private bath and a small living room in this cabin. The view of the lake is lovely.
The Iditarod Cabin: One of the newest additions to Winterlake Lodge built from dead trees standing on site. Large picture windows look over the lake and its small deck is the place to be at sunrise. The cabin offers a queen bed and two twins.
The Mountain Pass Cabin: Is situated closest to the main lodge. It offers a queen bed, private bath, comfy open-style living room and a rocker on the deck.
The Happy River Cabin: This is their newest cabin. It is located with a nice lake view, and offers an artisan log bed, open-style living room area, and private bath. This cabin sits alongside a hiking trail that leads to the swans on Red Lake. |

When you are a guest at either Winterlake Lodge or Redoubt Bay Lodge, you’ll experience Kirsten Dixon’s Alaska cuisine. Kirsten has been cooking in the backcountry of Alaska for more than twenty years. She is a passionate culinary student, educator, and an avid gardener. Kirsten spends most of her time at Winterlake Lodge where she frequently teaches cooking classes in the kitchen or gives tours of the herb garden.
Kirsten Dixon and her talented team of chefs take pride in the uniqueness of the Winterlake Lodge and Redoubt Bay Lodge kitchens. With an emphasis on local and fresh ingredients, Chef Dixon loves to use herbs from the wilds and from the garden. She assembles the best of the Pacific Northwest to offer her guests.
Highlights include Alaska wild salmon, wild berries, sourdough, fresh-baked breads and pastries, homemade jams and jellies, and specialty hand-crafted cheeses. The Within The Wild Adventure Company purchases organic food products whenever possible.
A Note from Kristen: "The opportunity to cook for people, traveling from all over the world, from all types of backgrounds and lifestyles, is the best part of the work I do. The opportunity that I have to live creatively has allowed me the time to pursue my interests: food cookery, culinary literature, gardening, teaching, and writing." |
